Donald Trump stated Friday that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping achieved progress on a deal to keep the social media application TikTok available in the United States. Trump also indicated he plans to visit Beijing early next year.
In statements made online, Trump reported a "very productive call" with President Xi, addressing issues such as trade, fentanyl, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and approval of the TikTok deal.
Trump further noted agreements to meet at the APEC summit scheduled for October 31-November 1 in South Korea, with Xi also expected to visit the US at a later date. Trump expressed appreciation for the 'TikTok approval' and anticipation for the APEC meeting.
Legislation requiring TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to divest the video-sharing app or face a US ban due to national security concerns has been delayed by Trump on four separate occasions. Speaking to reporters in England on Thursday, Trump mentioned he sees 'value' in TikTok, believing it helped his standing among young voters in the 2024 election.
